Definition

A Camera Truck is the production vehicle used by the camera department to store, organize, and transport all camera-related equipment. It serves as the department’s mobile base of operations—housing cameras, lenses, monitors, accessories, tools, and backup gear. On professional film and television sets, the camera truck is essential for efficiency, security, and workflow management.

Purpose of the Camera Truck

The camera truck allows the department to keep valuable and delicate equipment safe, climate-controlled, and accessible throughout the shoot. It provides an organized space for the 1st AC (First Assistant Camera) and 2nd AC (Second Assistant Camera) to prep, maintain, and troubleshoot gear between setups or company moves.

Typical uses include:

  • Loading and unloading gear at the start and end of the day.
  • Housing spare lenses, filters, batteries, and camera bodies.
  • Serving as a controlled environment for lens cleaning, sensor checks, or repairs.
  • Acting as a staging area for camera builds before heading to set.

What’s Inside a Camera Truck

While each show and department organizes differently, most trucks include:

  • Workbenches and Prep Tables: For assembling and maintaining camera rigs.
  • Shelving and Drawers: For lenses, filters, matte boxes, batteries, and accessories.
  • Charging Stations: For camera batteries, monitors, and wireless systems.
  • Climate Control: Helps prevent condensation, overheating, or static buildup.
  • Security Systems: Locked compartments and alarmed doors protect high-value gear.

Large productions may also include a small workstation for the DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) to offload media or monitor dailies.

Who Manages the Camera Truck

  • Camera Truck Manager / 2nd AC: Maintains inventory, cleanliness, and organization.
  • 1st AC: Oversees camera prep and ensures gear is shoot-ready.
  • DIT or Loader: Uses the truck as a base for data management and media handling.

On union shows, only authorized camera crew are permitted inside the truck, ensuring accountability for expensive rental gear.

Why It Matters

A well-run camera truck keeps the production moving. Time lost searching for equipment or replacing damaged gear can delay shooting and increase costs. Organized storage, proper maintenance, and clear labeling are marks of a professional camera team.
